An acquired brain injury is different from traumatic brain injury (TBI). A TBI results from direct external contact to the brain, such as in a car accident, slip-and-fall accident, assault, explosion accident, or another incident that causes an injury to a person's skull or brain. An acquired brain injury is an injury to a person's brain that results from any one of the following:

  • Asphyxiation;
  • Drowning;
  • Hypoxia;
  • Infections, including bacterial, parasitic or viral infections;
  • Ischemia;
  • Lack of oxygen;
  • Shunt failure;
  • Strangulation;
  • Suffocation;
  • Toxic exposure;
  • Tumors;
  • Water on the brain; and more.

These injuries occur before, during, or after birth, and may affect only one portion of a person's brain, or it may affect their entire brain. The symptoms and effects of this type of brain injury depend upon many factors, including where the brain damage occurred and the severity of the damage. In most cases, acquired brain injuries cause changes in a person's personality and/or behavior, difficulties in speech, language, and memory, as well as seizures, paralysis, comas, and even death.

Treatment for an Acquired Brain Injury

Acquired brain injuries cause changes in a person's personality, behavior, speech, language, and memory.

Following an acquired brain injury, rehabilitation may not follow a set protocol, due to the wide range of causes of the injury as well as what part or how much of a person's brain has been affected. Instead, usually, it is an individualized process that often involves a multi-disciplinary approach and is guided by the needs and circumstances of the patient. If a patient sustained a moderate to severe brain injury, they can expect to undergo extensive rehabilitation in the areas of physical therapy, speech/language therapy, and occupational therapy. They may also be required to participate in psychiatry treatment and other psychological-related therapies. Depending on the severity of a patient's brain injury, this process may take several months or even years. Unfortunately, in some cases, a person who has sustained a serious acquired brain injury never fully recovers from the injury.

Omaha Acquired Brain Injury Lawyers - Shortening the Path to Justice

Because of the high costs related to acquired brain injury treatment, it is critical for injured victims and their families to be aware of the legal options available to them if the injuries resulted from the negligence of another person or entity. Holding the appropriate party responsible for a brain injury can help cover expenses such as hospital bills, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, pain, and suffering, and more, and also ensure such negligence does not happen again. However, often brain injury lawsuits can be difficult, which is why many find it beneficial to have a skilled Omaha brain injury lawyer that has successful experience handling similar cases working on their behalf.
