Help Protect Your Family and Home from Serious Burn Injuries

Burn injuries claim an estimated 265,000 lives per year worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). A great many burn injuries are preventable. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that simply installing smoke detectors in your home cuts your risk of dying in a fire by half, whether the fire is started by a defective product or wiring or by human carelessness.

Experienced Omaha burn injury lawyers know how severe and debilitating burn injuries can be. That's why they encourage every Nebraska family to take steps to protect their homes and families from the risk of fire and burn injuries. The CDC recommends taking steps like these:

  • Install smoke detectors on every floor of your home and in every bedroom.
  • Change smoke detector batteries at least once per year. Making the change every time you change your clock to and from Daylight Savings Time is a great way to ensure batteries get changed twice each year.
  • Make a list of emergency phone numbers and post it next to your household's telephone. If your household uses cell phones only, make sure everyone has emergency numbers programmed into their phones.
  • Create a floor plan of your home and identify at least two ways to get out of each room. Windows count! On upper floors, make sure at least one window in each room has an emergency ladder handy for a quick exit. Practice using emergency exits.
  • Create an emergency plan, including a safe place away from the house for the family to meet up if there is a fire. Call the fire department once you have reached this place, and don't hang up until the dispatcher tells you to do so.
