Making Disaster Plans During Pregnancy

By Omaha Personal Injury Attorney on February 3, 2014

What to do in emergency when pregnant?Making emergency plans in case of a disaster, such as inclement weather, is crucial to protecting your family’s well-being. When you are pregnant, your needs change.

To protect yourself and your unborn baby, it is important to have a plan that includes reliable transportation, a safe place, and plans for situations in which you are unable to reach a medical facility during labor.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that pregnant individuals and their family members take the following steps to prepare for emergencies:

  • Learn about your local community action plan and its recommendations for emergencies.  Every emergency situation is different, so it is important to know what to do in particular types of emergencies, including where to evacuate and what to do if told to stay at home or “shelter in place.”
  • Talk to your doctor about what to do in emergencies, where you can get prenatal care, and where you can safely deliver your baby if the hospital is closed or routes to the hospital are blocked off.
  • Make a back-up plan for getting to the hospital or health care center.  Also, choose a safe place for your family to meet if you have to leave your house during an emergency.
  • Put together a medical kit in case you have to deliver your baby at home.  The CDC provides a detailed list of items to include.
