Choosing the Right Car Seat for Your Kids

By Omaha Personal Injury Attorney on March 10, 2014

Omaha Child InjuryFamilies throughout Omaha, Nebraska rely on their cars to transport their families safely to and from school, sports events, and other activities.

The best way to protect your children from brain injuries and other auto accident injuries is by ensuring they ride in the correct car seat.

The right car seat for your child depends on your child’s height and weight, as well as on the size and type of vehicle you have.

  • Infants and toddlers should ride in rear-facing seats as long as they meet the seat’s height and weight requirements.  For many children, this will mean they ride in a rear-facing seat for up to two years.  Rear-facing seats should also be placed in the back seat.  Never put a rear-facing seat in front of an airbag.
  • Toddlers and preschoolers who have outgrown a rear-facing seat should ride in a forward-facing child seat with a harness.  Children should ride in their forward-facing seat until the exceed the seat’s height and weight requirements.
  • Young children who no longer fit in their forward-facing child seats but who are not tall enough to wear a seat belt properly should ride in a booster seat.  A booster seat is used with the seat belt to ensure the seat belt fits properly.  Children typically outgrow booster seats when they reach four feet nine inches in height, often between the ages of 8 and 12.
