How Common Are Accidental Drowning Injuries?

By Omaha Personal Injury Attorney on June 3, 2015

Accidental drowning is the fifth leading cause of accidental death in the United States, and the number-one cause of accidental death among children ages 1 to 4, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Many Omaha families keep water safety in mind in the summer, when pools are open and family trips to lakes, rivers, or even the ocean might be the highlight of the year. But it is important to keep water safety in mind year-round, especially in the household. Here’s why:

  • On average, about ten people per day in the United States die as a result of accidental drowning, according to the CDC.
  • About twenty percent of all deaths from accidental drowning are suffered by children under age 15. For every child who dies from drowning, five more children need emergency care for near-drowning injuries – some of which are catastrophic.
  • Non-fatal near-drowning injuries can include severe brain damage, organ damage, and other harm that results when the body and brain are deprived of oxygen. These injuries may take only seconds to set in during a drowning scenario.
  • Over 30 percent of children ages 1 to 4 who die of an accidental cause die of drowning – the largest single cause of accidental death among young children.
  • Most drownings occur at home, in swimming pools, hot tubs, and bathtubs.
