This Summer Keep Fireworks Safety in Mind
For many Omaha families, summer holidays like Memorial Day and Independence Day just aren't complete without a dazzling fireworks display. While fireworks can cap off a perfect party or other holiday event, they can also be dangerous. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), in 2011 alone, fireworks caused over 17,800 fires, eight deaths, 40 injuries, and $32 million in property damage.
The NFPA recommends leaving fireworks shows to the professionals. If you plan on including fireworks in your backyard party or barbecue, however, follow safety rules like these from the Fireworks Safety Council:
- Get informed. Read up on local laws involving the use of fireworks, and choose only fireworks that are legal for the place you'll be lighting them. Read all the safety information and paperwork that comes with the fireworks you purchase. Use the Internet or visit your local library or fire department for more information on fireworks safety.
- Play it safe when lighting fireworks. Set up a fireworks lighting area that is clear, located away from buildings and other flammable items, and equipped with a hose, fire extinguisher, or full bucket of water. Assign one responsible adult to light the fireworks, and keep the audience a safe distance from the lighting area. An overabundance of caution is better than a burn injury or fire!
