Omaha Family Awaits Outcome of Wrongful Death Suit

By Omaha Personal Injury Attorney on October 12, 2015

The family of murder victim Melissa Rodriguez is awaiting a judge’s decision about a wrongful death suit filed against the Omaha Police Department and the Lasting Hope Recovery Center. According to Omaha’s KETV 7, Melissa was killed by her mentally disturbed boyfriend in August of 2013.

The boyfriend, 19 year old Mikael Loyd, had been abusive to Melissa. Police issued a warrant for his arrest. When Loyd turned himself in for the warrant, police placed him in Lasting Hope Recovery Center, a mental health facility. Authorities felt he was a danger to himself and others. While at the facility, Loyd called the police and again asked to be arrested on the warrant. When police arrived at the facility, staff at Lasting Hope told them Loyd was still under their protective custody. Two days later, Loyd walked away from Lasting Hope, found Melissa, and strangled her. Melissa’s grieving family believes negligence on the part of police and the facility led to their daughter’s death.
