Help Kids Get Around Safely This Summer

By Omaha Personal Injury Attorney on May 5, 2014

Omaha Child InjurySummer is a great time for children to head outside, get exercise, and practice their independence.  But it is also important for kids to stay safe.  By teaching children how to walk safely through their neighborhoods and communities, parents and caregivers can reduce the risks children face, helping them to have a happy, healthy, and fun summer.

That’s why experienced Omaha child injury attorneys encourage parents and caregivers to practice these safe-walking skills with their kids:

  • Choosing where to walk.  Teach children how to choose safe places to walk.  Sidewalks and walking paths or trails are designed for pedestrians, and are often an excellent choice.  When sidewalks and paths aren’t available, teach children to choose roads with slower, lighter traffic and to walk facing traffic.
  • Deciding where to cross the street.  It is best to cross streets only at intersections with traffic signals and marked crosswalks.   Intersections that give a clear view in both directions can also help children see whether traffic is coming before they cross.
  • Crossing safely.  Children who are old enough to consistently choose the safest place to walk and to choose where to cross the street are ready to work on crossing safely.  To cross safely, children must be able to evaluate a number of factors, such as whether traffic is approaching in either direction and how to walk safely across the street surface.
  • Expanding their skills.  Not all crossing sites are the same.  Once children can cross familiar streets safely, work with them on expanding their skills to different crossing sites and conditions.
