Top Back to School Safety Tips from the National Safety Council

By Omaha Personal Injury Attorney on August 18, 2014

Nebraska Personal InjuryEach new school year represents an exciting step forward in your child’s growth and development. As kids grow, they develop the ability to handle new responsibilities. By helping kids handle their school-related responsibilities safely, parents free them to explore their worlds with confidence, learn new skills, and proudly take their place as one of the “big kids.”

Here are some tips for encouraging safety this school year, from the National Safety Council and your experienced Omaha personal injury attorneys:

  1. Review walking and bicycling safety. Whether kids walk or bike to school or simply explore the neighborhood with their friends, the start of school is a great time to review walking and bicycling safety tips. Remind children to walk on the sidewalk or on the left side of the road facing traffic. Practice “stop and look both ways” at intersections, and make sure they remember always to cross the street at the intersection – never from between parked cars.
  2. Practice school bus safety. Children ride school buses for field trips and athletic events as well as for transportation to and from school. Stand at the bus stop and show your child a place to stand that is a safe distance from the bus. Teach kids not to approach the bus until it comes to a complete stop, and always to wait until the bus driver signals them to cross before crossing the road in front of the bus.
  3. Choose a safer backpack. Backpacks with ergonomic straps, waist belts, or wheels can help distribute the weight of a child’s books, lunch, and other items, protecting spine and muscle health. Never allow a child to carry a backpack weighing more than 10 to 20 percent of their own body weight. For example, a 60-pound child should carry no more than 6 to 12 pounds in his or her backpack.

The Omaha child injury attorneys at Cullan & Cullan LLC wish every child a safe and fulfilling school year!
