Hospital Watchdog Leapfrog Group Releases Updated Hospital Safety Scores

By Omaha Personal Injury Attorney on May 26, 2015

Omaha Medical MalpracticeThe Leapfrog Group, an organization that tracks and monitors a range of safety and care issues at hospitals nationwide, recently released an update to its Hospital Safety Score reports.

The Hospital Safety Scores use a letter-grade system to rate over 2,500 hospitals nationwide. The grades are compiled based on a number of criteria, all of which are aimed at reducing the 440,000 deaths that occur each year in the United States due to hospital errors, injuries, infections, and accidents, according to the FAQ that accompanies the Hospital Safety Score reports.

Interested members of the public can search the Hospital Safety Score information online. They can also examine the grades each hospital has received since 2012. This year, the report includes ten hospitals in and near Omaha, Nebraska. Two of the listed hospitals received an “A” grade, while four received a “B” and the remaining four received a “C.” No Omaha hospital that participated in the study received lower than a “C” grade, according to the website.

Experienced Nebraska hospital malpractice attorneys, along with the Leapfrog Group, note that although many hospitals have improved their scores in recent months, there is still much work to be done in order to protect patients from medical negligence.

The Hospital Safety Score includes 28 different patient safety measures, intended to track how well hospitals protect patients from preventable injuries and errors. The scores are updated twice each year, in the spring and the fall. Participation in the Hospital Safety Score program is voluntary, and any hospital is eligible to participate.
