How the Legal Field Helps the Medical Professional

CULLANMD began decades ago and has successfully helped train thousands of medical students and physicians in the art of medico-legal ethics and preventative medicine. Founded by Dan Cullan MD JD, CULLANMD offers mentoring programs for both medical students and practicing medical doctors.

Often, medical-legal education is lost, forgotten, or abandoned in the training of young doctors and the practice of experienced physicians. If you are a medical student or physician interested in rotating with CULLANMD, contact us for a chance to experience CULLANMD's medical-legal ethics and preventative medicine rotations.

While rotating with CULLANMD, you will experience the medical-legal landscape firsthand. Every year, millions of lives are affected by avoidable mistakes within the healthcare field, and approximately one hundred thousand lives are lost from preventable medical negligence. Overworked staff, medication errors, surgical mishaps, communication errors, and nursing violations of routine protocols are common cases you will experience while rotating with CULLANMD. You will have the chance to view medical malpractice cases from the other side of the courtroom and understand the patient’s point of view. Common cases involve medical errors causing brain damage, spinal cord injury, paralysis, brachial plexus injuries, cerebral palsy, burns, and wrongful death. You will also have a chance to witness a host of non-medical malpractice related cases involving semi-trucks accidents, automobile accidents, and dangerous or unsafe drugs or products.

The rotation presents a unique opportunity for a physician to witness and understand patient and family expectations after severe injury or death. Over your tenure with CULLANMD, you will also become aware of the most common medical errors and learn how to avoid them in your future career as a physician and how to better handle them should they occur.

Medical Malpractice is often talked about, but is a poorly understood topic. At some point in time in every physician's career, that physician will come face to face with a medical error and need to understand how to treat the patient in the wake of an unexpected result. When an unexpected outcome results from actions that fall below the standard of care, physicians can feel caught between the insurance company and the patient in an effort to do the right thing to resolve a situation. While rotating with CULLANMD, you will see the conflicts a physician may face after a bad outcome, and learn how to avoid being caught in a "wall of silence" between himself/herself, the patient, and the insurance company.

The rotation will focus on The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization’s program which advocates "breaking through the wall of silence". You will come to understand why the Joint Commission advocates open doors of communication between patients, physicians and healthcare institutions.
